Hamilton 18s 9 series "Click" to Login or Register

I had some company trying to snag this watch, which is serial #676719, and I will say 18s. I thought for fun someone might, for two cents, guess the series #, the jewel count, and what is "wrong" about the movement, which the seller was upfront about, (and I plan to fix that soon). Incidentally, smart or not, I passed up a PL924 and a 977 (both nice) for this one in a yellow gold-filled case.

Kenny, a nice looking 21J 940 motor barrel. The only thing I can see from the picture that looks wrong is the regulator pointer which is too short and looks to be blue instead of silver.

Sharp eye, Bob. I guess the series no. 940 mark isn't too difficult to spot, but the regulator is indeed not right. I'm on the lookout for one, and I would be grateful if a club member might have one on hand to sell to me. Here is a photo of this watch's dial.

18 size Hamilton's are my favorite but I would have a hard time passing up a 977 for a 940. The 977 just doesn't come by that often. I 924 is no big deal they are a dime a dozen. Nice looking watch Kenneth. Any even number model 18 size Hamilton regulator arm will work but not the old number Hamilton's. The arms are different.

Your welcome Kenneth. Of the 940's there are 6 different patterns that I know of and maybe more I don't know of. This in my opinion is the nicest looking of the common 940 patterns. The first is unmarked the next has 940 marked on the side of the barrel plate. The next has 940 on the side of the barrel plate and Adjusted 5 Positions across the barrel plate. Then the one like yours and then one like yours but stamped Made in USA around one of the barrel plate screws and finally the sun ray pattern witch coast you double what the rest cost.

The final 940 pattern in the 1920s was the one with "MADE IN USA" in a circular pattern around the left barrel cover screw. That "sunray" variant, if I remember correctly, was actually a private label rather than a regular production movement.

All the 940 markings are great collectables and great watches, congrats!

Thanks guys. Good info. And as you suggest, Don, I just read that these were pretty well-made watches.

I bought this one because I don't see many dials plus hands that pristine, and I am told the dial is original. I know that the hands and case are.

Kenneth Hamilton made many watch models in all sizes. Hamilton's most popular 18 size watch was the 940. They are a terrific watch and is one of the most highly produced 18 size watch Hamilton made. It is very collectable even with the high number produced.

Hamilton also has a very good very popular 16 size watch and that is the 992. Again very collectable even though Hamilton made so many.

On any given day on the bay you probably have at least 2 dozen of these two movements up for sale. The fact that there are so many out there and they still hold there value is a fine testament to Hamilton.

Your dial and hands look correct to me. That is a great looking dial. With proper care that watch will out live you.

I have a regulator arm but I would rather keep it. There are several club members that sell parts. Hopefully one of them will offer to sale you the arm. If not let me know and I will part with mine and sale it to you.
