Can anyone tell me what adj a Mdl 1883 Waltham 15j Crescent St. has ? The movement is just marked adj.

Hi Bill, from what I've gathered, when a movement states "adjusted" it is to 3 positions. I may be wrong here as sometimes people state that a watch is adjusted and also to Temperature, Isochronism.

In Ehrhardt's Waltham book he states they were adjusted to positions, but as Glen stated I think that means 3 positions because Ehrhardt uses the following designations for watches;
A = Adjusted
AP = Adjusted to positions (what he has for yours)
A5P = Adjusted to 5 positions
AT = Adjusted to temperature
U = Unadjusted.

As a 15 Jewel Waltham, it need not be expected to be over 3 positions from the factory if it was delivered after 1890 or so. Beforehand, it could have well been considered RR Grade.

That said, many railroads also accepted "non-railroad" grades if they passed time inspection. Time inspectors brought many "non RR Grade" including 15 Jewel watches up to grade through their own efforts. (Ask Lindell about his dad's watch)

Finally, I even would guess that many Hamilton/Waltham/Elgin/Illinois "Ball" watches were "NOT RR Grade" until they had been timed and cased at the Ball "factory".
