I was reading an earlier post by David and a Rockford that he was working on and because of that I went through my pile and found this old Rockford....sn 137697, 18s in a coin silver case.... Is this what is called a 'sidewinder'...?

It, too, is a SW/LS & KW/KS.... Looking at the data base for this S/N There is nothing listed for it. Not the mdl., # of jewels, nothing....

I wonder who has a better database that can tell me something about this watch....

Is it missing a regulator adjustor...?

All I could fine was that this one was made in 1881, is a model 3, and they made 50,400 of them over the manufacture period. It was built as a hunting case movement, but in your situation it was installed in an open face case, so yes...it is a 'side winder' in it's current configuration.

I know Elgin sold them this way, as seen in this 1908 ad from Waynes Elgin site:
