Here's my current ranking favorite: an 18s IWC Co swing-out with a copper inlay of a sawmill.

Anybody know the significance of the "3"?

Very nice detail, and you captured it nicely, too.

Along this line a short while ago we were talking about a member's case that depicted a warship that was identified as the US Maine of the Spanish American War fame. I was reading about the Star Watch Case Co., of Ludington, MI, and one of their most popular cases was a depiction of the US Maine. I was wondering if the case we were discussing was one of these Star cases...

Eric, the "3" may indicate a 3-ounce case. I think the general range of case weights was from 1 to around 5.

Eric,

Who "wood" have thunk that a master carpenter would have a case with a saw mill on it? Smile

Very nice.

I believe Bruce is correct that the number 3 indicates that it is a 3 oz case. I collect big coin silver cased KW/KS watches and most of them are 3 oz. My biggest one is a 6 oz hunter cased Elgin.

Thanks, boys. Smile

I wouldn't have guessed it had anything to do with weight. I've got quite a few of these larger 18s cases, and this is the only one with any number other than the SN stamped on it.

Very scarce Waltham case Edward Eek

I have now seen only 3 in 35 years of pockety dealings. I saw one in a dealers inventory with a WI 25 years ago, now yours, and finally one currently available in the IHC used items for sale or trade that John Beale has housing a 23 Jewel wind indicator. If I were a betting man Roll Eyes, I would wager that yours must also be a WI Confused

bb

Buster,
This case houses a 1935 Vanguard that is not a WI (I wish it did). I took another look at John Beale's watch, that might be the one I saw a photo of. I would like to add that to my collection, but!

Some real beauties there and I especially like the big elk case!! What watch is in it and who's the casemaker??

No real comparison and just scanned on my flat bed but here's my "Tom Sawyer". Supposed to be whitewashing Aunt Polly's picket fence but, snuck down to the creek with his cane pole to catch a few crappies Smile

Well mine isn't unusual but I felt left out. This one screws up nice & straight but I didn't have that way when I took the photo. I just liked the pattern.

I know this is a Keystone die-strike, and that there are several variants, but this is the nicest example I own:

My recent purchase from fellow 185er Barry Hanstein has a sawmill on the back also. These are his pictures. Hope he doesn't mind. This watch weighs a ton. It's a 18 size Elgin Veritas and the case is 4 ounce sterling silver.

These are some really nice engraved cases....I love them all....

That Tom Sawyer really brings back some boyhood memories of the pole fishing I did growing up in rural Oklahoma....

Buster, that Elk just above your Tom is an Illinois Nickel Silver(Silveroid)Watch Case and in it is my grandfathers seven jewel Elgin, sn 3669092, nothing spectacular, just a good timekeeper and definitely a family heirloom....

Claude has a nice Elk case also, just above mine....

Eric, yours looks like it just came from the 'stamper'....man, it is really crisp looking....

Keep'em coming folks....

Regards,

Jerry

Norman the Maine was a two stack coal burning armored cruiser with twin steam engines/twin screws with 9,293 HP I believe and yours looks like an earlier warship but I'm not 100% sure. But yours is a great looking case!!

What about the big ole elk case with the mountains in the background, is it YGF and what's ticking?? Very nice, in fact all very nice!! I admit to being partial to outdoor scenes and the old locomotives with thick smoke coming from the stack!!

bb

What great looking cases, we have.
Like Claude I like the South Bend 12s cases.
#1 is a 12s studebaker w/g case and the 2nd one is a 12s y/g case.

This is a 18s case from Sears Roebuck. It's only gold filled but has the most texture to the main part of the case and heavy patterns to the back cover. Sorry for the bad lighting (florescent) but the case shows no brassing, which again adds to the whole look and feel of an oddball case manufacturer.
It houses a U.S Watch Co. from 1898
