Star Watch Case Co "Click" to Login or Register
posted
I'm new to this forum. I have a full hunter'gold' pocket watch marked on the inside rear cover Star Watch Case Co Ludington Mich U.S.A. and the serial no 1911692. Inside the inner rear cover it is marked THIS CASE IS GUARENTEED TEN CARAT GOLD FILLED AND TO WEAR 10 YEARS. The movement is marked Swiss Made and 16 jewels. Can anyone tell me its age? Do I set the hands by pulling up the winding knob? Its very stiff and I don't want to break it. Thanks.

Hi Nigel

Welcome to the group, we would be more than happy to help you with your questions but it would help if we saw photos of the watch. There were several ways to set the time but it would depend on the age of the watch to how it is set. So without giving the wrong advice & you damaging the watch photos would help.

Hi Nigel, welcome to our group. Please try to post a picture of the watch, or at least the size of the case as the diameter of the case body.

As for setting it, Some Swiss movements have a small button on the edge of the case that has to be pressed to use the winding stem to set the time.

A very few have a setting lever you have to pull out much like American made watches. That lever is a small metal tab at about 5 o-clock on the bezel surrounding the crystal.

That said, most swiss movments are pendant setting and you only need to pull on the winding stem and it will "click" and shift into setting mode.

If it does not click out with any more than the same force you use to lift a cup of coffee stop! The watch needs to be cleaned.

Sometimes the winding button will pull out easier if you turn it while pulling it out.

Hi guys - thanks for such a warm welcome and thanks Christopher for the twist and pull suggestion. Works perfectly so now I don't have to wait for it to stop and then wind it at the stopped time. You can probably tell I'm new to pocket watches and have just 2 so far but I can see me collecting more albeit at the cheaper end of the market. Will post some photos when I have a minute to see if it can be dated. Thanks again - Nigel (U.K.)
