Illinois Central Dial question "Click" to Login or Register

I have seen a dial on ebay that says Elgin then under it, Illinois Central in a green triangle.

It looks vintage, has all the needed requirements, and I would like to know when they may have been used, and is it a Train company and is it an old one?

I will post a picture soon.

Thank you,

Sheila

Shiela,
My gut reaction is that this is a faux aftermarket P.O.S.. Even if this were an Illinois Central dial version I'd seen before (it is not)I wouldn't believe this dial was true. If it were a metal dial that I had had refinished, I'd send it back for a redo! I'll stop.

Sheila,

As a follow up to Cort's post, I would echo his opinion. This appears to me to be an original dial in a plain configuration, that has been "enhanced" by the addition of a screened "Illinois Central" logo. The screening is ill-sized and poorly executed, note the gaps where the green doesn't meet the black, that the black overlaps the center hole, and that it is mis-aligned relative to the Elgin name. A dial painter 100 years ago would have been ashamed to let this out.

In my honest opinion, it's yet another creative way to cash in on the current wave of high prices for all things associated with "Railroad Watches". I just don't think this dial ever was associated with a railroad watch.

For what it's worth,

Cary

You had the same thinking I did!

It sure didn't look like something they made back in the early days, and I thought it was sloppy too.

It's on ebay and I could not believe it when I saw it, what a mess. At least it didn't sell the first time around, and it has no bids so far! Maybe it's time for a seller lesson.

Thank you for the information. I guess I got this one right, even with the soldering on the back and the sharp edges, I knew that the logo looked all wrong.

Bless,

Sheila

Sad really. I see an excellent Elgin dial that would have a good value in its own right now made worthless and useless by unscrupulous sellers looking for a quick buck.

John,
I could tell this dial was the real deal, but the added logo sure messed it up huh?

I finally learn all the wonderful "ways" of an authentic dial, and then this!

Your so right, that dial should have stayed the way it was, it looks to have been in great shape before the addition.

Somrtimes the so called improvements sure can make you sick.
