In an earlier post Dave Abbe mentioned that Waltham had up jeweled several watches. I was wondering if there is documentaion of the serial numbers because I think the Model 1883 below has been upjeweled. The watch is actually a 17 jewel but the 17 Jewel stamping looks different. All in all a nice watch with gold balance screws and gold jewel mounts. The screws and regulator are gold colored as well.

I think you are right, as this watch is already a premium movement with even a fitted spring barrel bearing. A.W.W.Co. still lists this movement as a "Grade 35, 15 Jewel Pendant set, P (Premium)" finish. As a late 1880's watch this could be an early upgrade would to meet the market pressures from the RR Timing act put in force in 1883 to reduce the thousands of collisions caused by to poor schedule keeping on the rails.

Sheila, first it is very nice to see you posting again. The issue on the "War Watch" production is something I have also been looking at and posting about a few times, the 1942-44 Jeweling and naming of the Waltham model 1908-12 movements seems to have been a little goofy at the time they were asked to ship "anything that ran". Actually beginning in the 1930's, Waltham began to use model grade numbers with the size (16) and Jewel count such a 1617, 1621, etc., and I have a few of these too. The naming was another matter, and I cannot fathom why the "Vanguard" name was used on an upjeweled 9j watch except as a "win the war", "horological anachronism".
