Elgin Grade 616

Hi all,
Has anyone got any info on this later grade of Elgin watch. I believe it is about a 1954 vintage, made in the US, but there is no info on the Elgin site for it.
Thanks for any info on this.
Have not got it yet, so if and when I get I will post if interested.
I have just found a 2009 post regarding this grade, although my serial numbers are not listed in the numbers there, so there likely is another several thousand out there unknown as yet.
Thanks,
Bill

Bill it is listed on the Elgin site, try where you enter the serial number G=616 and it will display the data. I think the 616 is one of the last nearly all parts made in America, there were some later grades that were made in America but contained Swiss or France components.

Hi Claude,
The serial number on this one is I-281135 which is not listed on the list, hence my comment on there likely being more around than what is mentioned.
This I281xxx falls in between the listed ones ?
Thanks for the added info.
Bill

I281001 I281001 1000 1954

Your number is listed but shows no data, I282001 shows up with data but not I281001, you have to remember that Wayne was using data that was in a flux since Elgin was moving production to South Carolina. If you look he shows a total production of 42000 but only shows about 12 runs, Wayne shows about 42000 but with so many produced an error of 5-10% would be easily 2000-4000 and except for the first run would be within reason. Most of the last runs were only 1000 which means that the total production might have been 43000 to 44000.

Probably send Wayne and email with some pictures so that he can look into it.

Very interesting watch Bill....did you buy it on eBay and if so why not post some of their photos....

I agree with Claude, you should send photos to Wayne so that he can investigate and possibly update the Elgin site....

Jerry

Bill I just noticed your question about the value of this watch....

Of course many things should be considered such as condition, rariety and others so it is really up to the buyer to set the value.... but I think the value would be somewhere in the range of $125 - $250....similar to a grade 573....

Just a guess on my part though....

Regards,

Jerry

No Jerry you are in the ball park, you see some ravaged ones in the 50-100 dollar range, and you see some listed by psycho sellers that want $400+ but $125 to $250 depending on condition is what you typically see the 616 go for on Ebay.

Jerry and Claude,
Thanks again. I did not know if I paid to much for this, but paid $80.00 plus shipping, looked pretty good to me condition wise, so felt it was decent value,
Thnaks,
Bill
