Peter that is a very high quality movement and in my experience a superlative time keeper. The only problem I have had is the the Elgin dial for your 240 is hard to locate. Often the dial seems to bring as much or more than the movement. If you clean up your watch and the dial and are happy with it you really have one of the best American RRG watches.

I would probably pull the dial and just give it a nice cleaning in a way that has been discussed on prior topics. Deacon is right about finding a model 8 dial at a decent price. Even thought they sold quite a few RR model 8's, the full plates that had DS dials were probably 10 to 20 times more if not greater.
I know Dave likes the 19j and you can get the impression from other people that for the money the 19j was about as good as it gets without just having window dressing.
I find my model 8 Elgins to be excellent time keepers not matter if it is a GMW 17j or a Veritas 23j.

Well, Pete asked me to do a few things to his Elgn 19J 18s Grade 240, and he is on vacation so I figgured I would show the IHC185 clan what a real old WELL USED warhorse looks like with a new Balance staff, Mainspring and a quick buff on the worn through Gold Plated case
