Merits and Demerits of the 16s 23 Jewel Bunn Special "Click" to Login or Register

In considering the acquisition of the 16size Bunn Special by Illinois in the 23 Jewel model, what are the relative merits and demerits of the Jeweled Barrel version versus the Motor Barrel Version. I am asking about the 40 hour or NON-60 Hour wind type only. Of course I understand that ALL the 60 hour versions of any jewel count are motor barrels.
Is the jeweled barrel earlier - is is scarcer, please share with me some of the vast expertise present here in the 185 club. Thank you in advance for all info and comments.

The early 23J Bunn Special is much rarer than the later (Model 9 and up) movements. Lacking the later design Motor Barrel makes it collectible for the rarity more than the performance. My personal favorite has been the Model 9, 19 jewel version because it is exceptionally accurate and as beautifully done as the 23J but with a much easier service cycle lacking the unnecessary extra cap jewels. The one pictured ran for over a year so very accurately that I only needed to reset it for Daylight savings time.

Clark,

My only 16s 23 jewel Bunn Special is from 1923. In my opinion, these are some of the most ornate and beautiful American RR grade movements ever made. I've never owned an earlier jeweled barrel model but there is probably little if any difference in performance ....the finish of these grades was superb and potential tune-ability for accuracy is amazing; these are very stable and solid chronometer grade movements.

This image is a re-post but it seems like an appropriate time to show it again.

Thanks to David and William for some excellent info. I have not yet decided which model to look at seriously, until I form an opinion of what the quarry shall be.

Sorry for the fuzzy image. Here's my 23jewel, jeweled barrel Bunn Special. It doesn't have the oooohhhh!!! factor of the motor barrel, but I kinda like it.

The dial. Another crummy image. Not original to the movement, but is a period correct Bunn Special dial with the straight line signature and the small diameter second bit.

The WGF Bunn Special case is at least 10 years newer than the ~1914 movement. Looks ok, though.

Handsome indeed, Kevin. I think the small seconds bit sweetens this one up. I have seen this model with both Gold lettering and also Red lettering.

Wow, I have been fortunate to purchase a 21 jewel 60 Hour Bunn Special watch from the forum here a few months ago. Was one of my dream watches to own.

My watch has the exact same 24 hour red and black dial as the picture above this post. I have been trying to find more pictures of this dial. So was good to see that.
