I believe that it is correct. I have a case with (I think) identical markings. Of course I have looked for it for 20 mins without being able to find it.
As I recall, the screw marks in it fit a 16 size Elgin, which I thought was odd, as there aren't supposed to be any Ball 16 size Elgin movements. Hmmm....

Hello John,& Ed,
Here is an original 16s Elgin Ball Dial. It is in mint condition. I don't think they made very many of them. I have seen 3 and as I remember there are only 6 known to exist.

Finally found the case! Roll Eyes Roll Eyes
The markings are identical to yours, screw back & bezel 20 year yellow gold filled case, serial number is 9,268,424.
And yes, the only set of screw marks in the case (I obtained it empty) align perfectly with a 16 size Elgin movement.

Bob,
Save me one of those 16 size Elgin ORRS dials if I ever find the movement to go along with the case & dial. Wink

John -

These Pugh Bros. Ball Models are nice cases and are usually well engraved on the rear. Here is a thread on-site with some more pics and info on these ...

I have 2 Elgin Ball dials. They look just like the one you have. The most noticable feature an orange second section(from back). Still looking for the movement!?....Robert

I have a couple of these cases also....

but have always been suspicious.....

if they could engrave the Pugh Logo, then most certainly the BALL MODEL was within their capability....

After seeing the nice ones, well... the case of mine is not so elaberate but must say it is in very good condition.. Engine turned back is about 95 percent.. It has that somewhat oversized rounded crown which I believe is original..Inside is a 992, which appears very original to my eye.. # 1648013...

A quick recap on these "Ball Model" Pugh Bros cases. We now have four examples listed, all being Philadelphia Watch Case Co., 20 Year yellow gold filled, 16 size, screw back & bezel cases.
Here are the serial numbers:
9,262,697 (Terry Hall)
9,265,587 (John Pavlik)
9,268,393 (Terry Hall)
9,268,424 (Ed Ueberall)
As for who did the "Pugh Bros." engraving, while we may never know for certain, a large retail jewelry store such as Pugh Bros. would have certainly had case engraving equipment on the premisis.

Robert,
Is your Elgin Ball dial a 16 or an 18 size? As far as I know, there was only one package (roll?) containing 6 brand new 16 size Elgin Ball dials ever found. The 18 size, while scarce, were used on the Grade 333 18 size Elgin Balls.

Ed,

Here's another for your list. It has fancy engraving on the outside case-back and is very close in number to Terry's first one on your list. Interesting to see so many of these surfacing.

9,262,708 (Lin Riddle)

My recollection is that Pugh was an Elgin distributor and also the Ball Time Service inspector for the Pittsburgh area. The latter might explain this connection we're seeing.

Here's another Pugh Brothers / Ball Model case...

I am certain there are more than the 6 of those Elgin Ball dials in existance. There have been about five listed to eBay over the last year, and I bought two of those.

mine are well worn.... not pristine examples.. and the movements contained i do not believe original to the cases....

this type of engraving was easy compared to the 'other' pugh brothers cases with the inside so elaborately engraved....

I had forgotten I had furnished Ed and Kent with the numbers some time ago.... thanks Ed...
