I just purchased this 18k repeater by Paul Garnier. I am waiting for it's arrival & will post much better photos. It has a name dial with a portrait of Paul Schwartz. Paul is from Chicago & owned some sort of textile company. He had a son Paul. Tom, can you give me anymore info on this man? Thanks for all your efforts. Best, Jim ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

James, I had been following yours & Gerald's posts on this watch, lucky man to own that. Do you think this photo could be your man at age 62? Tom ![]()

I have a feeling that is his son. He died 10 years ago at the age of 99 & that photo looks like from the 60's which would have been right. Paul Jr looks like he would have been born around 1900. I'm looking for his father or grandfather, the one who would have owned this fine watch.

Are you positive on Chicago, there was a Paul A. Schwartz in the textile business that lived in Rhode Island for part of his life. He was born about 1863 in Poland. If you think this is a possibility I will see what else I can find. This is from 1907 ![]()

So far this is the only Paul Schwartz that I can find that was in the textile business. I find where he ran several different mills from about 1907 into the teens. I am still trying to find him after that but he might have passed away during that time since he was born in 1863. It looks like he stayed in the RI & NH area. Tom

OK Tom, just talked to the owner. She knows nothing about Paul Sr. Where he was born, worked or lived, nothing. My fault, I misunderstood her, sorry... She knew Paul Jr. Jr was the one who lived in Chicago with the textile company. So, I can only tell you about Paul Jr. He died in 97 or 98 at the age of 99, which means he was born in 1898-99. He was married in Michigan to a woman named Gertrude. He went to Notre Dame University & then on to Chicago. Maybe from here, you can back track to Paul Sr. I hope this helps some. Thanks again for all you hard work. I want you to know it is very much appreciated. Best, Jim

Ok James I am still looking, so far about a dozen Paul Schwartz's born in that time period & living in Chicago. Are we sure he is a Jr., I found one that is in some type of wool business but his father's name wasn't Paul & then later it appears either his father died or his parents divorced because he is living with a step father & his mother who is now a Phelps. Tom

Tom, he is not a Jr, his son is. Did you get to read my last post? I'm looking for the father but all the info I have is on the son. I was hoping the info on the son would lead you to the father. All the info I have on the son is in my last post. The father was the original owner of this watch. I'm sorry for the confusion. Jim

I think I got it straight. The guy that was 99 & recently passed was the junior right? So I am looking for another Paul that had a son Paul born about 1899 or so. Tom

Yeah! That is correct. THANKS!

Would you happen to know Paul Jrs spouses name? I found a Paul born April 1858 in Germany. In 1900 census he was living in Jersey City New Jersey, he was married & had a son Paul who was born Dec 1893 in New Jersey. Paul born 1893 is listed in 1930 census in North Bergen New Jersey married to a Sadie, he works as a bill clerk in a textile factory. So far this is the only Paul born around 1900 that I can find that his father was also a Paul. Since he lived so long would you happen to know if he had lived in Chicago all his life? After 1930 it is harder to track people because the census hasn't been released since then.

Well I will keep working on it, I am really surprised that with the textile, notre dame, Gertrude & Chicago that I am drawing a blank so far. Also there are at least 25 Paul Schwartz in Chicago around this same time period & one I found listed as being in some type of wool business but then nothing else matches. I won't post anymore until I find something more concrete, if you get any more please pass it along. Tom

Tom, Just curious. How do you find all of your information? Do you use the internet exclusively? I just love reading these posts. Whenever I get a watch in my hands, I always wonder who owned it first. Actually, I wonder about all the tools I use too. So many of them are from watchmaker's estates. I hope I do them proud, although sometimes I think I can hear them smacking their heads in disgust when something I've done goes off the beam a bit!

Hi Dale Most I get on line, I belong to several pay sites & then I just do a lot of web searching trying every combination of the information I have. You would be surprised how many hits you can get by just changing the order of the words. It also helps that I love history too, my kids always said I should have been a history teacher & others say I should write books on history, my problem is I just spend way too much time looking. I even search for information on stuff I see on ebay that I have no interested in buying. It is an addiction. Tom

I just received the watch in the mail & I am very pleased. One of the neatest watches I have ever owned. And what a movement! Video will be added so you can hear it chime. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
