Excelsior Watch Company "Click" to Login or Register

I have a GF, OF, size 12, Excelsior watch. Both the case and works have the words Excelsior watch company on them. No other markings on the works. I can't find any information on this company. The dust cover has engraved 1911 on it. I am suspecting it is Swiss. Can anyone help me out with information on this company?

A photo of the markings might help. In the US the word Excelsior was a trademark of three companies that I can find.
1. Hammel, Riglander & Co. Inc, NYC filed 08/08/1905 issued 01/15/1907 watch hands, balance staffs & jewels.

2. Muhr's, H. Sons., Philadelphia, Pa. issued 02/24/1885 filled watch cases.

3. Keystone Watch Case Co. & New York Standard Watch Co. filed 05/08/1905 watches, cases & movements.

Donald, whenever possible it is best to include photos of the watch dial and movement in order for our guys to properly evaluate questions that are asked....

Here is an Excelsior watch that I purchased right here on IHC185 recently and it is made by NYS watch company....

Excelsior - NYS

Does yours look anything like this one...?

Regards,

Jerry

Many Thanks Tom and Jerry. Yes, it looks very similar, same trademark. The serial number is 492 thousand and it has an Excelsior case. What do you know about New York Standard & Excelsior or where I can I find out more info.? (I don't have a macro lense that takes a very good picture.) This watch is not running, the case is in excellent condition and the the balance wheel looks to be ok. Is it worth repairing?

In the price guide there is small amounts of information on each watch company.

Some of the information I found is;
NY Standard Watch Co. Aug. 13, 1885-1929
Factory in Jersey City, NY
Watch names, Crown, New Era, Dan Patch, Excelsior, Columbia, Regent, Ideal, Wilmington, Perfection, Highgrade.

Purchased in 1903 by the Key Stone Watch Case Co.

Key Stone at one time of another controlled the following companies.
E. Howard Watch Co., New Jersey & Waltham (not to be confused with the original E. Howard & Company).

New York Standard Watch Co.
Crescent Watch Co., of Newark
Philadelphia Watch Case Co., Riverside NJ

Tom & Jerry;
I found a camera that does a fair job of close-ups. So here are some pics of the Excelsior pw.

The only works I saw that was similar was the sz 6 No. 44 HC on page 333 of the 2010 Shugart bk. I'm pretty sure it is a sz 12. Any ideas, anyone?

Ah Donald! What a difference a few good pictures can make. Now we can see what you're talking about.

The top and bottom edges of page 34 of the Shugart watch guide are graduated scales in millimeters and Swiss lignes.

Hold the movement of your watch under one of these and get the side-to-side measurement. There's a table on page 34 that will give you the corresponding movement size.

Welcome to IHC185.

Best Regards,

Ed

This watch has the NYS markings on it. It appears to be a 7 Jewel watch, it also looks to be a possible sz 6 mvmt. in a 12sz case which a lot of those were made around that period. Usually it was a marketing strategy to use up the smaller mvmts. that were in stock and not moving.

bb

Sounds like it wouldn't be worth getting it fixed. The HC case is in excellent shape though. Guess I'll put it on the auction and see if anyone's interested.

Buster;
You were close on the size. According to my measurements, it is a size 8. (I used p. 34 in the Cooksy book.) Thanks for the info and advice. You guys helped solve another pw mystery!
