I have an 18s 21jewel model '92 Vanguard, 10 mil. serial no.Mine has the 4 extra jewels as cap jewels on the escape wheel and pallet arbor. I know some of these also have the jeweled safety barrel. My question is, does the 19J Vanguard have a jeweled barrel, or 2 cap jewels in the escapement, or mixed runs of both combinations?Waltham ads for these 18s Vanguards said they were "the finest 18s movement in the world".They sure are a nice one! Thanks, Ted.

In my experience the 19J 18s Vanguard has a Jeweled Motor (safety) Barrel. The movement looks like a 17J because there are no caps on the Escapement or Pallet Jewels and the motor barrel Jewels are actually internally mounted Inside the center Mainspring Arbor spur tube making it freer to rotate about the 2-piece winding staff.
