I need some input on how to place this movement into a case since the stem is present,do I have to remove the stem, sleeve and crown and then insert into case ?? I was amazed I was even able to repair this and get the movement going but now I have an understanding of horological fever!

Mark What is the serial number of your movement, that might help us to determine exactly what model you are working on. Also photos would help. Most movements will go in from the dial side of the case with the stem pulled out in the set position (even though yours is lever set the crown often still will pull out). Some movements do require the stem to be removed but those are stems that are held in with a screw on the neck on the back of the case. I am sure there are others that I am forgetting, so photos would help a lot. Tom

Mark, please give us the manufacturer name of the watch, s/n and post any pic's that you may have.... Depending on the level of your expertise, sometimes it is best to let a watchmaker install the movement into the case for you....especially if the stem on the movement needs to be removed to install the movement into the case.... It would certainly help if photos were available.... Regards, Jerry

Mark, If you have the correct case (the one the watch came with) and as the movement is a lever setting type you would know already if you had to remove anything but the case screw to remove the movement in the first place. Your post title says "Elgin 16s Model 3 Lever Set", and you confirmed the model 3 has the winding stem coming out of the watch at the 3 o'clock position. The correct Hunter case for this usually has a Screw-on cap hiding under the crown or a small set screw on the neck holding in the winding crown and stem which has a femal socket that fits over the winding stem coming out of the watch. If you are planning to use a later case that has a male winding stem, you need to find a female stem to replace in the neck (a hard task indeed).

Mark As Dave has pointed out, these Elgin model 3 movements require a female stem Model 3 case. If you already have a case, that's great. If you don't, it can be a little tricky to find the right one. We've had discussions on this subject before and you might find it helpful to look at this one. And you can also do a search on "Elgin model 3 case" and come up with more on the female stem cases. Two other types of Elgins (doctor's watch and convertibles) are 16s size and have a male stem movement that requires a female stem case. Hope this helps. John
