Hampden "Railway" Case Question "Click" to Login or Register
posted
Do any of you Hampden collectors know when Dueber started marking the triple hinged cases "Railway"?
I have seen a few similarly configured cases in the 1,000,000 serial range not marked "Railway"
Thanks.....Keith

I believe that Deuber made "Railway" signed cases around the time that Hampden was moved to Canton and set up shop in 1889 there.

In another post I discussed a Canton-signed Railway s/n 642247 movement with the Railway signed case. That is an 1889 watch from the first year of presumed Canton production deliveries. In fact the movement looks to be made in Springfield, and then probably signed in prparation for the move to Canton. Mr. Dueber's Ego forced him (I am sure) to mark his better 3-hinge case for these as soon as they could be shipped with the Canton Signed Movements.

In case this helps, Hampden Watch Co. registered the trademark Railway in the script like Davids picture, July 15, 1899 & used it since April 1, 1880 according to "United States Horological Trademark Index" by K. Meyers.

The book doesn't show the trademark Railway being registered for the Dueber cases, but they did register the Dueber Coin with the anchor symbol Jan. 10, 1882.

They did register a case Railway Dueber Silverine Aug. 19, 1890

Thanks Guys,
I note that the picture David posted of the "Railway" marked coin case shows a serial number in the 3 million range. I guess that would mean Dueber made quite a few triple hinge cases of a similar style in earlier years.......Keith

Excepting some Swiss matching numbered cased movments and factory-cased Hamiltons and Illinois (at times), I believe Case serial numbers are a conflagration of production data, pure hoax, the time of day and the price of eggs in China.
