I've seen pictures in some of Roy Ehrhardt's books of Waltham RR watches with B.H. Cheydleur, Watch Inspector, Norwich, N.Y. on the dial.THe RR watch inspector list I have does not list Cheydleur in it.Wold anyone know which railroads he worked for? Also, wondering about a possible inspector in Willimantic, CT. named D.C. Barrows, who I've heard had 18S Hamiltons made with his name on the movement.Willimantic used to be a major railroad town in the old days. The New Haven, Central Vermont and Providence & Worcester(or whatever name it was back then) came together in Willimantic....Ted Brown.

Repairing, both of watches and jewelry is given special attention, and owners of fine chronometers may leave their time-pieces here with the full assurance that they will be handled in a skillful manner and put into the best possible condition. It seems Mr. Barrows did a little of everything but I couldn't find a reference to being a watch inspector he is in the city directory starting in 1875 as a watchmaker & he is listed as such until about 1915. By 1928 his wife is listed as a widow. He is also listed as being Mayor of the town in 1903 & 1904. He was a Mason, treasurer of his church, treasurer of the city water fund, sold sewing patterns, president of the Co-operative Savings Society of Connecticut, was an optician, member of the Willimantic Cemetery Committee, member of the Board of Relief, sold photographic supplies, listed as an engraver. Found he was born 4/10/1853 & died 6/20/1915. This is his ad from the 1900 city directory. Tom

Thanks Tom And Gerald for the great info! The reason I asked about Barrows ,is that Willimantic is next door to my town, and I go thru it daily on the way to work...I saved some of the mail order watch lists I got years ago(before the internet took over), and they're fun to read today. This dealer, Gary Anderson, of St. Paul MN., sold this early Hamilton, here's the exact description: "Hamilton 18s 17J 936 #910 near mint movement "D.C. Barrows Willimantic, Conn.,OP Ds RN dial has tiny mend at center, solid 10K gold "A.W. Co." case with blank shieldshows light wear but no abuse, a very early Hamilton contract watch $549.00". This was probably early 1980's.I always wondered about Barrows since I saw that back then.Gary Anderson was a good guy to buy from, always put out a huge list.I got some really nice watches from him.Its unreal to read these old lists and wish I could go back to the pricesof that time.B.W. Raymonds, 992's, Vanguards etc. for under a hundred bucks.Imagine that!

I know what you mean Ted, I have always wanted a $20 gold piece & back in the early 70's you could buy them for about 70 bucks for the run of the mill one. Back then that was more than I could ever come up with, so I just dreamed someday I would get one. Now you can't touch one for under $1000, so I just continue to dream. Tom

Right on, Tom.Today, if anyone knew you had that gold-piece, they'd probably kill you to get it!It really is amazing how much pocket watches go for today. That Barrows Hamilton was probably a bargain for someone who could afford it.If it's still out there somewhere, its worth many times that amount....I got my 18s 17J Hampden 2-tone Special Railway for 65.00! That seemed like a lot of money at the time! Thanks again...Ted.
