Hello, I have a friend that called me the other day and asked me to look at his Grand Father's old watch....It turned out to be one his Grand Father had in a drawer for a long time and it is a Waltham Mdl. 1877, Appleton Tracy, 18 size, SN-1971420 and is in an open face case, silver with the gold train inlaid....and is a sidewinder....

I don't have any pictures of it and it is already in the hands of Chris Abell....the watch has quite a number of problems and Chris is going to take care of that....

He wants it in a Hunter case and I had one needing repairs also so I sent it to Leon for him to work his majic....

My question is this....

Will the Mdl. 1877 Waltham fit the case that I am planning to use....Chris seems to think it will be okay as long as there is no problem with stem that Leon will put in the case....

I have included a couple of pics for you to look at and hopefully you will be able to see some of the detail....

When I receive the case back either empty or with the Waltham I will post pics of it which will be after Leon & Chris is finished working on it....

Thanks for any comments you may have as to the feasibility of such a match....

Regards,

Jerry

The case requires a lot of work....

1. Lift Spring.
2. Covers adjusted.
3. Crown & Stem.
4. Some dents need taken care of.
Crystal is okay.

Looks to me like it should work out fine Jerry, and be a nice match when completed.

I know less than anybody on the 1877's..

I was thinking that they have a male stem projecting from the movement itself but I am probably wrong...

And I thought they had to be fitted to a case by drilling a small hole in the mid section to hold it in place as I was thinking the movement edge has a small teat projection to go in the drilled hole of the case midsection. Does it have one or two case screw[s]???

I was also thinking that if it is stem~set it will reguire a stem/sleeve arrangement?? And if lever set a screw through the pendant may have to come into play??

If I am off base, just put me in my place and I will get back in the Hamilton corner where I should stay Frown

bb

Ray, Thanks for your kind comment, and I too hope that it is a good match....mainly because the owner is a good friend and we of course want our friends to be pleased. Larry, my friend, wants to have ready to pass on to his grandson who is only three years old....The only thing he really wants is to have it in a case with a train on the backside and this case has one, very faint from wear, but it is there....

Tom, this one is lever set and this case has the lever cut in the correct place....of course it is stem wind....

Buster, I didn't see any screw in the midsection, but that doesn't mean anything, I didn't have the watch apart but I do remember it having two case screws....Chris seems to think it will be okay as long as Leon puts in a 'standard stem' I think were his words....

I thought maybe some one of us may have tried or made a similar transition before and could let us know how it worked out....

Thanks to you all for your valuable comments....I appreciate them all....

Regards,

Jerry
