Here is a strange one. Numbers are clearly outside the Type II range and well into the Type III. However it is clearly marked as a Type II with the Motor Barrel 6o and the 60 HOUR.

Now normally I would expect this to be a parts watch but that is not possible as the serial number is on the barrel bridge and if the number were correct the "60" should not be there. Over 4000 Type III's were produced before this Type II came about.

This is just another one of those oddity's that pops up every now and again, and again, and again........

I can't believe it but I won this one. I put a fair value on it to take the lead and when I came back I am declared the winner for much less than what I had high bid. The dial is repairable, a little chip near the 8 and maybe some chipping near the seconds shaft. I doubt this dial would have been on a Type II but since this is a later Type III by serial number it may have as the dial was not available until the Type III was released.

That makes this an even greater oddity with the serial number out of sequence and the dial on a marked Type II.

Added bonus....it looks like a nice display case.

The above mentioned watch arrived yesterday and it is in very nice condition. I swapped out the dial for a more period correct one and cleaned up the case. It is a very nice unmarked case that looked like it has seen very little service. Bow is tight, crown is sharp, crystals are clear, and very few marks on it.

Here it is from the back. Crystal back allows for easy viewing of the movement.

This is where it gets interesting. Notice the "Motor Barrel 60" on the barrel bridge as well as the "60 HOUR" on the train bridge, clearly all the markings of the TYPE II. If you look the serial number it is listed as a TYPE III and actually it is about number 4000 into the production of the TYPE III. Very odd. This one as well as maybe up to another 9 (the size of the trays they worked from) must have somehow got burried back in the vault and found later on.

Here is a picture of the Barrel Bridge markings on another TYPE III I have and notice the text is all center justified so no way could the above movement have been forged.

Tom,

Thanks. This is for me what makes this hobby so much fun...collecting the oddities and Illinois has a lot of them.

Tom,

Yes I was following that. It is a very nice watch and an interesting subject. It may have very well been a private label as their is no information surrounding it's unusual markings. Unlike the the Sangamo that had the very collectable "Extra" marked on it which was documented by Meggars, there is much that has been missed and may take awhile to sort out. I say hang on to it, time may tell when another one similar pops up.
