From the November 1896 BLE journal.

"Point the hour hand to the sun and the south is just half way between the hour and figure 12 on the watch.

For instance, suppose that it is 4 o'clock, point the hand indicating four to the sun and 2 is exactly south. Suppose that it is 8 o'clock. Point the hand indicating 8 to the sun and 10 is due south"
