OK, so I couldn't stand it... I have several 274's and a couple 405's... then Mike posted his "little 409"... and I got this little envy thing going on... so I finally got off my wallet and sprung for what turns out to be one of the finest watches I've landed to date.
I borrowed the front bezel off another watch so I can admire the movement at will. Even got a reaction out of my lady who normally only humors me when I try to show her a new acquisition...

Mike, Mine is from 1920... the other one you've spotted is 1.2 million serial numbers newer from the last run in 1927. It is interesting to see the differences in the markings (motor barrel vs jeweled barrel) And this is probably because the other one has exposed jewels on the barrel wheel where mine are hidden under the wheel.
As a rule, I like the look of the exposed jewels on the barrel, but this watch is interesting to see it engraved in the plate instead.

Very high-grade! If it's like the other high-grade 12 size watches, I'll bet it sold for as much or more than its railroad grade counterparts back in the day.

A great watch. It is interesting that you can sometimes pick up a hi grade 12 size for much less than a comparable 16 or 18 size and in most cases the high grade 12 size pieces are considerably harder to find.

I agree with you. The 409 and the 510 I have are both from 1916 and the barrel jewels are internal. The only advantage I see with a model made later would be the motor barrel. I am very fond of these two watches and hope to someday find a nice example of a 410 of the same time frame.
Thanks,
Mike
