The Elgin 348 was a very rare version of the RR Grade adjusted Hunter Cased Elgin 18 size Model 2 full plate movement. A single production of 1000 of the 21 Jewel Grade 348 movements were produced in 1906. These were clearly designated for the more discriminating watch carrying person. As the Hunter movements were not as popular for RR use, this would be a "showpiece" to carry for personal use.

The value of the Movement is about $275.00 and you can add whatever appropriate value to that for the case.

There are different 348's, some were upjeweled grade 183's from 17j to 21j, some were created from scratch and all of these were in the 11M range. There were another set in the 10.5M range that were converted grade 149's but not marked Father Time but having the same DMK effect as the 149 and there was another later partial run in the 12M range also converted 149 run. The converted 149's are the rarer ones and probably only about 500 in the 10M and 500 in the 12M range. Probably Elgin created this grade as a HC mate to the very popular grade 349, in the line of the 149/150, 155/162 etc. Very nice grade watches with less than 4000 total production with the converted 149's being very highly finished and adjusted to 5 positions.

That was from a past discussion of the 348 and 249 that passed through my collection. Both VERY ornately finished:
