Early Case Identification: "L.A.S. PHILA"? "Click" to Login or Register
posted
I have an 18s Waltham Wm Ellery KW from 1866 (serial # 254052) in what I believe is the original Hunter case, which is marked "L.A.S. PHILA". Case # is 225. Could someone identify the maker? Thanks.

Hey Eric, that's a pretty old Will Ellery. My trademark book is in the mail. If someone else doesn't supply your answer before it arrives, I'll find out for you.

I just did an online search and found in an 1860 Philadephia directory a listing for a Louis Scherr, watchmaker. Searching that name I found that Mr. Scherr's middle initial was indeed "A" and that the family firm was still in business in 1899 as a jewelry, watch and dental supplies jobber. So perhaps this is the L.A.S. on this case?

I saw that name in my book but no middle initial
got me thinking it was not him.
