I think it says "MOM". It's not a tree stump but rather and inverted crown with a few items of personal protection hidden inside.
Back in the 40's my Grandfather was killed by a felled tree. My Grandmother took over the logging operation and ran it until she retired. She was a tough old gal and I can easily see her packing a pocket watch such as this. --------------------------------------------------------- Paul, if you google Hubert's suggestion of Woodmen of the World/images you will see lots of those tree stumps.
Is that an 18s case? I have a Columbus with a log dial that I put together as a tribute to "Bapci".

It's a 1909 Burlington 3 finger Getty grade 185 with the fancy (Dudley Do-right curly cue) Arabic DS dial. They crystal is faded yellow... I have high hopes the dial is near mint below the scrap crystal. The case has some brassing at the stem, but otherwise looks nice. I just liked the engraving, am fond of the 185 and was thrilled to find a DS Getty with a decent dial.

I too have one of the Columbus 18S watches with a woodsman dial. It's a fun watch to own.
I'm gonna run with the Woodman of the World connection.
Lorne, I thinks it's cool that you put together a watch to honor your Grandfather. I put together a Hamilton Lawrence for my father Larry... He won't wear it, but loves to show it off when he has company.
And my Mom carries a 992 she picked up at a garage sale for $15... she likes to gloat that she got a much better deal on her watch than I've ever found on mine.

I think I like her.
