Help with a Waltham issue -- "Click" to Login or Register

I have a Waltham Grade 1623. My confusion comes from the serial #30560759, in the ***** database tells me what I know. A 1623, 16s 23 Jewel OF RR Grade Pocket Watch. BUT.. On the movement itself it is signed Riverside with 21 Jewels! (23?)
Any one of the experts out there have an explanation for me? Is it a mistake of some sorts?
Any help is greatly appreciated..

Mark

The Waltham Watch Company grey serial number book has the same description. Grade 1623, 23J, Adj P
The cool thing is that the date range is 1940 to 1941 depending on how I interpret the date group. No doubt this watch saw service during the war.

The front matter of this book is rather interesting.

" To economize space and to keep the list from being too voluminous we have occasionally used a single grade name, to represent a group that used practically all of the same material, except possibly the jewels. The trade name, therefore, may be different on a movement in a particular group of numbers, but the information given in that group will assist you in the selection of proper material."

I would care to bet the pwdatabase used this book as a reference to populate their data fields.

There used to be a link here to an interactive Waltham data base controlled by a third party... it went away about the same time the pwdatabase came on line.

The pwdatabase asks you to submit variants you hold that do not match the descriptions they have for your serial number. They are pretty good at listing variations submitted by other users. I've actually been able to validate a couple of my watches that didn't match the original description based on similar observations posted by other database users.

Thank you Paul for the insight, it gives me some help. I have noticed that in some other resources it comes up as a Vanguard, the 23 Jewel version. Mine is more the 1621 Riverside version, except for the serial number designation. All have given me 1940 as year of make, one in July of 1940. Confusing.... My watch is listed, as you may have found by the way you described the data, on the PWdatabase. Most of my collection is, except for a few fine PW's, and some that he did not list till lately.
Thanks again Paul.
