AN 5742-1 Army - Navy specification number. This was the number of the specifications for this watch issued jointly by the Army and the Navy.

FSSC 88-W590 This is the number of this particular design of watch in the Federal Standard Stock Catalog. The catalog was to avoid having the same item with different numbers in various parts of the US military.

MFGS # 37297 This is the item number assigned and used by the manufacturer - in this case it is Hamilton's item number.

Serial # H17443 This is the US military's serial number that they assigned to this particular watch. The H stands for Hamilton and the rest means it is the 17,443 watch they purchased under a given set of contracts with Hamilton. It is different from the serial number on the movement since the number of on the movement is Hamilton's for their internal controls while the military serial number is the US military's for their internal controls to meet their tracking needs in their own systems.

Contract #s 3242 This is the contract number that the US military issued for procuring these watches.
