Cortebert kM II Kl. b-uhr. Kriegsmarine WW2. "Click" to Login or Register
posted
This is a real Cortebert B-Uhr, used by the Kriegsmarine on submarines as well as other vessels.
A very rare Cortebert Cal 554, Unfortunately the back has been denazified, but at very high magnification the Marine number and the swastika can be seen. The dial is luminous, using zincsulfide. The watch is depicted on page 238 in Knirims Military Timepieces Vol 2. The diameter is 57mm.
The IWC also used this means of lume.

Hi Werner!
Are you able to measure the radioactivity of this beauty?
Since the entire dial is covered by Radium 226 compound, I really wonder to know how radioactive it is!

Hi Claudio, unfortunately I don´t have a geiger counter/meter. The method used on these watches was zincsulfide, as was on the Lange & Söhne, IWC, and Paul Buren. Adrian van der Meijden wrote an article about the Lume on these watches here
They measured the radioactivity of these watches, as the method used was a mixture of Radium226 and zincsulfide...

Saying no radioactivity could be measured outside of the watch.

All the best to you Claudio

Unfortunately I don't speak german... It's a pity, since it looks like a interesting article, and wellmade.
I wouldn't have imagined a low leverl of radioactivity, since, for example, the WWW and the B-uhren are quite radioactive, more than the medium average level of radioactivity...

Hallo friends,
here you see three different types of Cortébert Kriegsmarine deck or navigation watches (B-Uhren):
- big cal 554, luminous (non radiating) dial, II. Klasse
- small cal 534, white dial, Erweiterte II. Klasse (extended 2nd class later in 1944)
- small cal 526, white dial, III. Klasse
