Hamilton 992B Ordinance PW Question
Just purchased a 992B in base metal case marked for ordinance dept. My question... Is the serial number marked on the outside of the case supposed to match the serial number of the movement? Just curious..

Bruce,

The number outside your case is the "ordinance serial number" assigned to that watch for tracking within the military. Inside on the movement is the "movement number" assigned to the movement during production which will not be related in any way to the ordinance number or any other number. And if you'd like some additional confusion there a "case number" inside the case back, it may be repeated on the frame and sometimes on the bezel, but at times the case components were mixed-up during servicing or repairs so numbers on cases are not always reliable.

Here in "Evolution Of 4992B and 3992B Markings, Numbers and Database" our own Scott Whittey maintains a great deal of information on some of these wartime watches.

Hope this is helpful.
