SHOW US YOUR WIRE-LUGS
As is well known, WWI (1914 - 1918) ushered in the wristwatch as an acceptable timepiece for men. The early models resembled small pocket watches with wire-like lugs to accept a strap. Examination of period photographs indicate that many military men used inexpensive non-jeweled wristwatches and thus these watches are also of interest.

What are some of your favorite early wristwatches of the WWI era?

Does anyone have any First Wold War period advertising for wristwatches, straps or those grill-like dial protectors?

Best regards,
Greg

As indicated on the dial, my favorite wire-lug was made by Tissot for the Signal Corps, USA (U.S. Army). It was probably made in 1917 or early 1918 at a time when the A.E.F. in Europe used local suppliers until equipment could reach them from the U.S.

From 1914 through 1918, the Aviation Section of the Signal Corps was the unit responsible for all U.S. military aviation. For this reason, there is a good possibility that this early wristwatch was issued as a pilot’s watch.

Best regards,
Greg
