I don't have my copy of Knirim's book at hand to double check, so don't take my word on it. However, I thought GUB was a post WWII Communist East German brand?

Hi,
it depends the way you see it...they are both ''Glashutte'' meaning that they came from Glashutte factories intending many watchmaking companies located in the geografical area of Glashutte, which was a ''watch'' city in the Black Forest.
This problably, and strange enough, is more ''Glashutte'' than the other one, to be frank, because this was manufactured by
G(lashutte U(hren B(etrieb, , Glashutte Watch Compan.
The fact is that we, Military Watch Collectors, see this as an impure evolved exact copy of the Glashutte located Lange & Sohne, WW2, 1 class precision, Eagles, Submarines, Swastikas...etc Smile which this watch is derived from, so we underestimate it for collecting purposes. As timekeepers they are comparable, large, power reserve indicator engine.
My opinion.... Big Grin,

Thank you for the link, Enzo.

BTW, in case my response above gives the wrong impression, please note that East German military watches are known to be of high quality. They are sought after by collectors of more modern military time pieces and collectors of Cold War era militaria.

Best regards,

Greg

Hallo friends of military German watches,

some information on Glashutte by me: Glashutte is a small town in the Erzgebirge just south of Dresden. It is famous for many excellent German watchmakers like Lange, Assmann, Union, Muhle, Strasser & Rhode aso. After WWII. it came under communist occupation and all those famous brands were forced to unite under 'peoples ownership' now with the brand Glashutte or GUB.
That was good luck for these brands after unification, because the brands were not burned out and could restart with their old reputation.

The navigation watch mentioned above is the exact successor of the Lange & Sohne B-Uhr cal 48.

And here you see mine with cal 48.1 thats central second version formerly used only in Luftwaffe wrist B-Uhren. (And its for sale)

Hallo friends of military German watches,

to get this series about Lange cal 48 derivates complete here a photo of the after WWII. versions.

They started first under Lange & Söhne, then A. Lange & Sohne VEB (Volks-Eigener-Betrieb, peoples owned company) and then Glashutte or GUB. The marking on the back says: 'In remembrance of the 4. Flotilla, Peoples Navy'

Hallo friends of military German watches,

and at least the evolution of the German WWII. Luftwaffe B-Uhr by Lange & Sohne starting from 1935 up to the last version of 1944.
They started with hour angle watches and movements cal 45.1 at least from WWI. pocket navigation watches over to cal 43.1.
Putting some wire lugs on the silver casing, defining the case specs, from silver to steel.
The dial specs changed in 1942 to the small hour circle.
Sorry but there are no development document with specs for case and dial still found, maybe all are burned after bomb raids of Hamburg Seewarte.
The development of the last cal 48 (navy, pocket) and 48.1 (airforce, wrist) came up to mass production in 1940.
