Greetings. The 1898 was a pivotal year for the USA. There was a raging debate about America becoming a colonial power or not. Such notables as Teddy Roosevelt were all in favor while Americans such as Sam Clemens were entirely opposed. We finished out the year in possession of Hawaii and various former Spanish colonies.

Our war began with the slogan, "remember the Main, to **** with Spain." As the year progressed, the US racked up numerous military victories against the Spanish crown, Many Americans were very proud of our military achievements against a major European power. Military leaders were lionized as heroes.

One such hero of 1898 was Admiral Dewey. In the battle of Santiago Harbor, Dewey destroyed the Spanish fleet. Dewey's flagship, the Olympia is currently a floating museum.

To commemorate the hero of Santiago Harbor, and other notable military leaders, various souvenirs were made including clocks.

Here we have an Ingraham 8 day time and strike clock honoring Admiral Dewey. The glass depicts US flags and the flag ship Olympia. The case was made using a steam press to make the various patriotic decorations. The image of Admiral Dewey is a separate wooden piece. Unfortunately, the dial pan has been restored using a Seth Thomas paper insert, otherwise it appears to be all original, It keeps time well.
