hmt Jawan Identification "Click" to Login or Register
posted
I picked up this watch a while ago and wonder if anyone can identify the maker and the user.
The stainless back has a broad arrow plus the following information:
W10/6645-000035
GC-00743
0214033

Many thanks,
Peter

I don't know what the "hmt" stands for, but Jawan was first registered as a trade mark by the West End Watch Co., which has been well established in India since the late 1800's. If memory serves, Jawan is a word in Hindi for warrior or something like that. West End marketed Swiss watches, esp. to Indian military men. This company may still be in business today.

Your watch may be an Indian issued military watch of circa 1970 - 1990? The broad arrow mark used by India after 1948 is almost the same as the English broad arrow, except the Indian broad arrow has a longer shaft.

Best regards,
Greg

Greg,
Googling jawan produces an Indian soldier or male constable so you are spot on. And the West End link will be followed.

Thanks you,

Peter

Decoding HMT Jawan Caseback Code
Well it is Military issue code
I have found some info about that to share
Example: My recent Jawan Caseback code is:

W10/6645-000035
GC-10731
0214033

" W10 " : that is another Ministry of Defence code for British Army

watches adopted by Ministry of Defence India as well for ARMY (Most

coding are similar)

" 6645 " (=NATO code for a wrist watch , a number we shall also find in

the Nato Stock Number or NSN (National Stock Number) ) ;

000035 is Model Number for HMT Jawan (found in all Jawan Caseback)

GC-10731 is individual issue for tracebility

0214033 is general HMT Factory code and production batch code etc.

Thank you Konrad, your books are an invaluable addition to the collectors library.

Anyone interested in military watches used in India might consider running a search on this forum of "West End Watch Co"
