Noted author Konrad Knirm has an interesting article in the October 2007 BULLETIN regarding WWII Luftwaffe navigation. As with Konrad’s other articles and publications, this one is well researched and highly informative.

WWII vintage photographs bring the old relics to life. Other images and graphs depict the various timepieces and where they were used in the time/navigation framework of the Luftwaffe. Alternate brand names of the various timepieces are provided.

Information regarding coded messages as well as the Enigma machine are also covered.

Experiences translated from a Luftwaffe flight officer’s memoirs provide a vivid example of the techniques of the Luftwaffe during long range flights over the Atlantic.

The article combines technical, actual use, and collector information in an informative manner.

This article adds further depth and color to Konrad’s well know book: MILITARY TIMEPIECES 150 years of Watches and Clocks of German Forces (available from the author). However, for more examples and detailed images of Luftwaffe timepieces, the book remains the best source of information.

Best regards,

Greg
