Winter is here so I am forced to leave my bicycle and go down to the basement workshop. My only companions are my 2 Jack terriers who know that I keep treats on my work bench...my wife dares not to go down on the threat of spiders.....Hey its quiet till the furnaces kick on and the Jacks run back up the stairs..Its my winter retreat. Several years ago when the dollar was low 80cents or so on the Euro I purchased a number of clocks Germany and Austria. The movement is out of Dachler case purchased at that time.Never really took a look at it but to confirm that it arrived intact three years ago. This is a good straight example of a early movement circa 1820's.Note the following: All most square movement with round top, adjustment for beat is round and done by a set screw(always seem to be perfect when clock is hanging on wall),movement mounts to seat board by mounts rather then through the pillars, gearing is very fine very close to a carriage watch made in the same time period, milk glass dial with cast brass thin bezel and the most unusual about this type movement is a 7 ounce weight running a eight day clock! When I cleaned the movement no wear and it runs great. The maker, Schenk, was born in 1794 and died in 1874. Became Civil Master in 1840.One of the reasons I collect the early Viennas is the fine craftmanship of the clocks and movement. In the early 1840's a fire in the industrial part of Vienna destroyed the foundries making the brass and steel used. After 1840 the you could use a little more weight and larger gears and not spend so much time on getting it perfect and start mass producing movements ... great idea hit upon by a young apprentice by the name of Gustav Becker....the latter clocks run great and need less care then the early ones by using a 2.5 pound weight. The consumer is always right...

Now I know where Herschede came up with their beat adjuster.
