J. C. Brown and E. N. Welch made ripple front cases. An example of each is posted below. These are the makers I am most familiar with for making ripple fronts. Does anyone have any examples from other manufacturers? Does anyone have more ripple front pictures to add? I think J.C. Brown had the better looking ripple molding. I would love to see examples from others.

The first clock in this thread with the hairspring balance looks alot like mid 1800's ships clocks I've been hunting. Could this clock be of this category type or is the "Ripple" front to fancy for maritime specs?

Noah Pomeroy was known for making marine movements. I believe this has been described as a marine movement, but I don't know exactly what, besides a balance wheel, make a movement "marine". Most examples did not have the balance wheel showing through the dial.

The strap is original. Several of the early makers used these strap type reinforcements on their movements.

Welch took over the JC Brown clock manufacturing business and sold clocks from the left over production parts and supply's.The ripple mouldings were made in a variety of designs, but all were made on the special machine Brown designed for this purpose, it just used different cutters and set=ups to produce the different ripples. I beieve the machine was destroyed in a fire and that ended the ripple production.
The little brass strap on the balance wheel movement is to hold the ratchet gear in place.

Thanks for the info. Do you know if the same ripple design was ever used on both J.C. Brown and E.N.Welch clocks? My recollection is that the Welch ripple was "flat" As shown in the beehive. The Brown ripple, to me, always seemed richer, deeper and more pleasing.
