Samie,
Congratulations on the new clock. I think you did very well on the price. It is a grand clock and you will be very pleased with it.

Now as far a the "Dark Side" thing goes.. I always thought that was.... well anyway, if you want a good timepiece get a clock. After all, didn't the jeweler always check the accuracy of the watches by looking at his regulator hanging on the wall!! Big Grin Roll Eyes Big Grin

Samie, I have referred to watch collecting as "going to the dark side" in a few earlier posts. I have purchased enough watches recently, however, to have trouble denying that there is something interesting going on there. Cool

One of the more interesting phenomenon of this site is the crossover between watch and clock collectors. I think it is pretty neat!

....I've always liked the solid slate pieces and yours looks like a very nice example Samie...I think you did very well on the price...the fact that the clock works for extended periods in some locations and not in others should be a simple fix (a shimming of one side or the other for a start)...overall a very nice 'piece, European I would guess, likely French in my opinion...

Hello Again Samie, Yes it's French, You can usually put these in beat by slackening the screws at the rear on the movement holding straps, then carefully turn the clock bezel slightly until the TIC TOC sounds even. When you get it right hold the bezel still and re-tighten strap screws. Also remember ,when winding hold the bezel still or you can inadvertantly twist the movement as the springs get fully wound, putting it out of beat again. I use a telephone amplifier with the lead clipped on the metal strap or movement when making fine adjustments to clocks. I bought this handy Item from Radio Shack whilst in the States.Regards, Ged.

Hi Ged, good advice and a good idea about the telephone amplifier, takes the place of a expensive tool, to set the beat.It really takes a trained ear to hear the tick tock.
I think Samie got a great clock and a decent price.

Hi guys
All this talk of crossing over rings a bell with me. A long time pocket watcher, I have just bought 2 carriage clocks which I liked so much that I could'nt resist them. I am now hooked, and off on another direction! Any hints on good internet or auction sites appreciated.
By the way Samie, nice clock (I enjoy reading your posts)- I have a couple of french clocks, and there are not many that can beat the french for style and decoration on their timepieces.
Very best Christmas regards to all,
Ray

Ray,

This is one of the more interesting things that has happened to many of us. The fact that every facet of horology is reviewed so openly on our Discussion Site results in appetites being whetted.

On where to find nice clocks, several of our members buy and sell clocks regularly, and perhaps this expanding of interests will also help expand our own on-site mart...

BUY AND SELL HERE! Chapter 185 Trading Mart

It would be great to have more clocks offered, both in the For Sale area and in the Watch and Clock Auctions on our site! Those who are in business, be sure to list in our Business Directory!

Best of this and every season to you and yours,

Lindell

Samie,
As someone that does not collect Clocks, but has a great appreciation for them, let me say, that you have purchased a beautiful clock, and I think it was a great deal too. Of course, I know nothing about clocks, but it sure looks wonderful to me! I think that's what counts in the end anyway. After all, where would we be if we purchased clocks that we don't like?
That may be good for a confirmed clock collector, that wants an investment too, but I believe that your FIRST CLOCK should be one that you would really love to look at all the time. You got yourself a GEM in that department for sure! Congratulations!

WEll i have my clock movement back together and running fine ,this has been interreting project for me..Overall it was in good condition no bad pivots or bushings there was 4 bad teeth on one gear, i was lucky i found a gear and did not have to repair the old one ,also had to repair the hole in the end of one spring..

The clockmaker who helped me on the movement is 86 years old and a master at clock repair without him it would probaly still be a pile of parts..

I plan on getting it back in the case in the morning..
