Much as I dislike any watch that requires a battery ,this is a very interesting article from the British journal for the history of science. It is in PDF (Adobe reader ) file form, 23 pages with photos of some of the early prototypes as well. This link opens directly to the PDF and not a menu , if you have a slow connection it might take a minute to load after you click the link but otherwise it will be almost instant.
