Origin of the name "HIGH IRON" rail is measured by the yard and very's in weight from 65 pounds to 160 pounds. 65 pound rail has a lower profile than 160 pound it is used on the auxiliary tracks such as elevator tracks and sidings. So when a train leaves the auxiliary track to enter the mainline its going on the "HIGH IRON "

Thanks for the information about the High Iron - found this nice little booklet in an antique shop in the midwest - mixed in with comic books.
