Here is the website for the Cass Scenic Railway, a narrow-gauge excursion line in Cass, WV: Click here to view Cass Scenic Railway website This West Virginia state park still operates an 11-mile narrow-gauge line originally built to serve the timber industry in the vicinity of Bald Knob in Pocahontas County. In 1911, at the peak of the timbering industry, West Virgina had 3000 miles of logging rail lines. The 11 miles still operating in the state park is all that is left today. The equipment in service includes six Shay locomotives and one Heisler, all live steam, hand-stoked with coal. These geared locomotives were designed to handle the extra-steep grades (up to 9%) typical of logging railroads. Multiple pistons drove crankshafts that were bevel geared directly to the driving wheels. ![]() | ||
