Cleaning oxidation off Chronometer face
Does anyone have a safe method for cleaning what looks like oxidation from maybe years of finger prints off the face of a Marine chronometer without damaging the underlying surface?

On silvered dials I have used Cream of Tarter (found in the spices at your local grocery). I mix it with water to form a paste and use a soft bristle toothbrush to gently remove the dirt.
Up to this point it has never removed any paint or silver from the dial, but be careful as it is abrasive.
Good luck,

Mike
