18 SIZE LANCASTER IN HEAVY 14K GOLD HUNTER CASE
Lancaster, 15J, 18 Size, 3/4 Plate, Nickel Stem Wind & Lever Set "Record" Grade Movement #71088 Dating I Believe To About 1886?

The highlight is the 14K gold case. Ultra heavy, the case alone weighs 3.4 ounces (100 grams). With the movement, 5.8 ounces (165 grams). One of the heaviest solid gold cases I have ever seen. The case is a very deep, rich, rose gold color.

Note that the front cover is dated at center "1908". The back cover is dated at center "1949". The movement seems to date much earlier. Any thoughts on the large spread between the covers (41 years) and the movement? Could the covers have been engraved at a later date maybe?

Note the distortion around the outer edge of the dial. This due to the fact that the dial is protected by a 1/8" thick beveled glass crystal. Quite a nice surprise when you open the front cover.

The dust cover looks to carry the same monograms as the outer covers. Unfortunately, I can't quite make them out.

Here is another oddity. When you open the dust cover, you will find a inner hinged bezel with a glass crystal that protects the movement.

A four hinged case with two crystals. Pretty cool huh?

The case is marked either "A.F" or "A.H." in raised relief and is numbered 10786. Anyone familiar with this mark?

Movement is quite clean. Winds and sets smooth and runs strong keeping excellent time.
