large studebaker watch collection
My brother and I have inherited a large "The Studebaker" watch collection. There are 6 Model 223's, 10 model 229's, 8 model 323's, 2 model 328's, and 5 model 329's. I'm not familiar with watch grading but what value would you give the entire collection and by model assuming each watch is in an average working condition. I know case types are widely varied so I don't know if any of the cases are solid gold, gold filled, etc.

At this point, I don't think either one of us are willing to sell any of them. My Dad intended for my brother and I to have and keep the 328's so I know we won't be interested in selling them. I know he paid over $3k for one of them and I think under $2k for the other. I'm not sure what the other models would really be worth. He has several other pocket watches but I haven't had time to go through them to see what's there. I thought I might share this because he was really proud of his collection and I don't know if you guys would know of anyone that would have this large of a collection of The Studebaker watches. Thanks in Advance, Darren.

Welcome Aboard Darren!

Some of us here have a real affinity for South-Bend watches, you've come to the right place. Wink

To properly evaluate your Dad's collection one would have to see them up-close or have exceptional images. You definitely have quite a nice group of watches there.

I for one would be interested in your posting each of the movement numbers for data comparison purposes. That is especially true on the 229, 329 and most particularly the Grade 328 examples. At this point all known grade 328 numbers fall within just 200 between 541001 and 541200 although 1,000 were blocked. I have 541033 and 541049 in my collection.

"The Studebaker" 541049 grade 328 is 14K Hunter-Cased...

Hi Darren,

You guys probably have more "The Studebaker" watches in one place than anyone else! I recall talking with your Dad a few years ago, his 328 number 541771 refreshed my memory of him. He was an interesting guy, it was fun to compare watches and experiences with him, he was enthusiastic and really he loved this hobby! I'm pleased to know that you and your brother are continuing the family tradition.

None of my "The Studebaker" numbers are close to yours but for those keeping lists of these numbers here are a few of mine...

• Grade 223

578433
621888
749165

• Grade 229

584064
643734
753665
753771
885996

• Grade 323

575000
757006

• Grade 328

Number 541013 sold in 2002 on eBay, 541129 sold there in October. Recently I sold 541070 but I kept...

541049

• Grade 329

579016
579286

I have folders with lists of other numbers but those above are in my collection.

Thanks again for sharing yours, anyone who would like to share additional "The Studebaker" examples is invited to do so.

Lindell

My brother and I will be dividing up the watches tomorrow afternoon. I've decided that I will keep about 5 of the watches and will sell the rest. I'm not sure how many my brother will want to keep. We do have an Elgin up down indicator watch that I believe we will sell. Once I get my watches, I will try to post what I have that I want to sell.

Darren,

Let us know when/where you plan on selling. I am starting to build a South Bend collection. I only have 5 watches so far, so I am interested in finding out what you or your brother will be selling. Smile

Thanks,

John,

I just posted a 323 on ebay that had a bad dial and case with a decent movement. It lasted a whole minute and 10 seconds after the auction posted. I was quite surprised. I'll be listing a few more watches on there probably over the next couple weeks. My seller name on ebay is punk5.

John, click on my name and send me an email. I will send you a MS Word file of the watches I have for sale.

Darren, that function is turned off at the present time. I will send your email address on to John.
