Finding the staff in a haystack "Click" to Login or Register

Is there a best way to sort through a lot of balance staffs to find the one you need? Or is it pretty much, hunt, pick, and measure.
I have an assortment of American staffs that likely has the one I need and it seems senseless to order a part that I already have.
Any shortcuts or ideas are appreciated.
What do you use to measure with? I have a small caliper-like divider with wing nut and a micrometer (not metric).
Thanks!

Kenny,I'm asking myself that same question.I have 300+ loose NOS staffs to sort through. What I plan to do is to measure the length of each staff within .10 mm and store them in that order.Trying to measure each dimension would take ?????? When I need a staff,at least I'll be in the ballpark, although with my luck NONE of them will be correct Mad!.After that daunting task,I've got 1000+ jewels to do the same thing to Frown! Oh well,at least I'll get plenty of practise and skill in the use of a micrometer and a hole gauge,as well as distinguishing the difference beteween jewel types. Sure wish we had a time warp to go back and just order what we needed Big Grin!(Let's do the time warp again Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin)

Sam,
After about 15 minutes they all start to look the same!
Ever spend hours looking for a part or altering it only to have it mysteriously fly away off the tip of your tweezers? I believe they sometimes fly through a time warp, never to return.

Kenny & Sam,

Hopefully you both have MS Word on your computers. I've compiled a list of all popular American PW staff dimensions in table form. It's located in my Helping Hand forum.

Since it's a table, you can sort by header information as to length, balance seat, etc. This should help you identify any loose staffs you have lying around.

Thanks again John,

With your help I've identified that I have several Elgin 857's (both varieties, long hub and short hub)! This is truly important and extremely helpful information. Thanks for the effort!

Thanks everyone. I will be uploading a new Word file that will provide an information header for each page. Make sure you select "View" - "Print Layout" from the MS Word task bar.

I may even try selling a copy of this on eBay! Big Grin
