Kevin PestorDouble roller balances
I took a balance out of my Illinois sz 12 watch to look at the pivots and the jewels. It has a double roller which i do not have much experience with. When i went to put it back in i can,t seem to get it lined up right with the pallet lever and it moves freely but not engaging. Is there a special way to put these in?

Ed UeberallKevin,
The method I use is to put a small amout of wind on the mainspring, so the pallet will stay on one of the banking pins. Then, when I drop the balance onto the lower hole jewel, I do so with the roller jewel rotated to the
outside of the pallet fork. I then gently place the balance cock into its proper position and, if luck holds, the balance will rotate right into the fork and the watch will start to run.

Kevin PestorI finally got it in Ed, i didn,t realize how much trickier these are to put in, than a regular single roller.
I also oiled the top and bottom jewel and i think i should have used less on the bottom as it slowed down the balance after.

Ed UeberallKevin,
Too much oil on balance pivots can cause problems. If you want to remove the excess, pull the balance, then roll a bit of
Rodico "One Touch"into a point and gently touch it to the cup of the hole jewel. The Rodico will pick up some of the oil. Then you can get some more practice putting the DR balance back into position.
