I was wanting to know if it is necessary to lubricate the Pallet stones & Club Teeth on the Escape Wheel?

Thanks, Phil

HI PHIL, DEPENDS ON WHO YOU TALK TO. ONE OR THE OTHER HAS TO BE OILED. SOME WOULD SAY TO OIL EVERY OTHER TOOTH ON THE ESCAPE WHEEL OR THE POINT OF CONTACT ON THE PALLET STONES. I HAVE A 30X MICROSCOPE THAT I USE WHEN LUBRICATING AND FIND THAT DOING THE PALLET STONES WORKS BETTER FOR ME. IT MIGHT BE TOUGHER TO DO IF YOU DONT HAVE THAT GOOD OF MAGNIFICATION. I WOULD HIGHLY RECCOMEND GETTING A MICROSCOPE. YOU WOULD BE AMAZED HOW LITTLE OIL A WATCH NEEDS WHEN YOU SEE THINGS THAT CLOSELY.

Christopher,

Just curious. What brand and type microscope are you using?

HI TIM,
I USE A GEMORO BINOCULAR. IT ACTUALLY ZOOMS TO 45X. THERE ARE SIMILAR ONES AT WWW.JULESBOREL.COM. THEY HAVE SMALLER ONES STARTING AT $265.

I put the tiniest drop of oil on the face of each pallet stone and that's it. If I forget and assemble the watch, I'll put that same amount on 2 or 3 teeth of the escape wheel. Very little is necessary and it will be distributed.

Over-oiling the pallet stones is especially bad because the action between it and the escape wheel is relatively violent and you are likely to spray oil all through the movement.

I use the same Mobius (Sp???) oil as I use for jewels. I know Rolex wants a different oil for each job but I've never noticed a problem. I NEVER oil the pallet pivots or the pivot-jewels.
