I have a question about a component on some old partial movements that I have around.

It's part of the winding or setting mechanism, as far as I can tell.

My question is, first, what exactly is it; and second, how do I remove it?

Both watches are old, rather large pocket watches--don't know the company because the back plates are missing, could be Elgin.

The part is like a metal figure eight (or snowman)-- ie two round metal circles attached into one piece. One, the larger, what appears to be a large screw-like attackment. It moves slightly in a fitted part of the pillar plate.

I assume, comparing it to the Components tutorial, that it's somewhat comparable to the setting cams and levels in the Elgin.

The part holds in place two small wheels that are part of the setting and winding mechanim (which is missing on this watch)--or the wheels may be attached to this.

I've tried to unscrew the large screw-like fixture, but it's too large for watchmaking screwdrivers. Moreover, it appears to be more like a pivot, than a screw.

If anyone has the time to unravel my prose and tell me how to detach this, I'd really appreciate it.

I believe you are talking about the vibrating arm. Also, it probably has left-hand threads so to loosen it, you will need to turn the screw clockwise.
