hi everyone todd here.
finally feel well enough to work on watches again.
so i am back!
so,
i bought this elgin grade 153 model 6 made in 1900 on epray.
it fit all my requirements for an epray purchase.
no cracks or chips in the dial, nice case, doesn't run. perfect for me.
great practice watch, need to find why it won't run, lots of fun.
when i opened it up it was full of an abrasive feeling black dust.
a lot of it!
i think it may be coal dust.
has anyone run across this before?
i am attaching a pic of the dial also covered in the dust.
going to polident the dial now and hope for the best.
thanks everyone.
missed you all.
todd

watch out with the polident as what you have is metal dial with paint on it it might not works
I will use water and some light detergent only.

Good tip Peter !! It looks to be a metal blank that has been painted with enamel paints to resemble a porcelain enameled dial.

I think you will be OK with a warm water and dishwashing detergent and using your thumb to gently massage away the dirt/debris/dust and a rinse. I like to use a hairdryer to dry these dials instead of using a towel on them to dry them.

regards,
bb

p.s.
for those of you unaware of the verb "pooched" or "to pooch" its meaning is,
when an old fool thinks he knows more than he does.
so he pooched it.
a valuable and useful verb in that it conveys its meaning while avoiding censorship.

Thanks for the etymology lesson, Todd! :-)

I have a friend (she was born and raised in London and Paris) who occasionally uses that word.
