Narrow Pattern 992E Movements (DATABASE ADDED)
Hi everyone. I got a 992E today that probably needs a new dial. I noticed the #5 case is in pretty good shape with no obvious brassing at my first glance. What is unusual is the damaskeen pattern. What do you think?

This watch needs a service and a dial.

If I read the list correctly this is from the first run of 992Es. Is that what others get?

Congrats Mike, that's a first-run (movement #2581001-2583900) 992 Elinvar with the narrow-pattern damaskeening. I just acquired movement #2582635 last month, which had the same damaskeening.

Best Regards,

Ed

Here is the case back. I assume this is a #5 case and the smudges you see polished out real well. No visible brass, but a tiny ding in the back.

Congrats! I have 1st run 2582801 & 2583371. In my opinion you cannot go wrong with 992E and in particular these 1st run.

Thanks for the comments. I seem to remember Lindell and I had a conversation about these several years ago. He indicated the 992E is not rare, but the narrow pattern 992E is rare. I bought this thinking I might resell but it sounds like the guys here on the club already have them Frown I have had it running and it seems to keep good time overnight. Any idea how much premium these bring? I've not noticed them on ebay, or here, as a sales result. Also, I think if I read the dial/case post in research, that this single sunk 080 dial could be original. I would entertain expert opinion on that even if I do replace it with a DS.

Interesting topic!

Beginning with the 2012 Edition of the Complete Guide to Watches the differences between narrow (early) and later (wide) damaskeened 992 Elinvar movements are referenced at the top of page 231 with images of two representative watches from my collection.

On the subject of relative values, consider the fact that more than 60,000 of the wide-stripe movements were produced in eight runs whereas apparently less than 2,500 of the earlier first-run design. I have suggested the narrow-stripe might deserve a "one-star" designation.

About cases, we would be likely find the narrow-stripe movements in any of the Hamilton factory cases available in the 1930-31 time frame. Since the Case 5 came out in July of 1928 and it is shown in the Hamilton catalogs of the early 1930s it is among the correct case possibilities. One more point, the dial on Mike's watch could not be original as these watches came with Double-Sunk dials.

Here is a list of confirmed narrow-stripe 992 Elinvars...

2581109
2581193
2581899
2582163 (LVR shown in watch guide)
2582625 (Ed's)
2582635
2582729 (1931 Inscription, Case 7 64637)
2582929
2582948
2583165
2583636
2583795 (Mike's)
2583862

Please post or eMail additional numbers for the list.

Mike,

I don’t have a first pattern 992E and would like one someday. As far as a premium I guess that depends on how much someone wants the watch on any given day. That’s a nice looking watch you have and besides the 080 dial the only issue I see is the minute hand is incorrect.

As I remember from doing the post on Hamilton dials the 080, 081, and 082 dial were designed when Hamilton was having problems manufacturing double sunk dials for the 992B RWS which was far after your movement was made.

I believe the correct HG 519 double sunk dial would be one with the heavier numerals which I notice on the 992E movements. I’m not sure because it could be the heavier numerals came out later and your watch is from the first run of 992E. I’m interested to hear what Lindell and Ed P. have to say on the issue.

I’m still learning about Hamilton dials and always will be. The more I find out the more questions that arise. At any rate the illustration below demonstrates the differences in the DS HG numeral boldness.

RR

The Bolder Numerals are on the left. Notice the 8, 9, and 4 have less white showing.

Guys:

I have a narrow stripe 992E serial #2583862 in a marked YGF Hamilton Model #7 case serial #74904 in near mint condition.

Thanks Lindell and Richard. I will put a 519 dial on this and check out the minute hand. It also needs a glass crystal and probably a service. I must have misread Richard's list of correct dials. The one on this watch is toast anyhow so it will be replaced. Stay tuned for finished photos.

If nothing else, this has brought this topic to the front of discussion. Something that I believe was needed.
