Invictas are very good timepieces, this one is a high grade mechanical stopwatch.

You should find the crown is spring loaded and if all is well pushing it down will reset both hands to zero. The next push should start the timer, when the event ends push it again to precisely stop then you can then reset for the next use.

I see the last event timed on your stopwatch lasted 18 minutes, 41 and 3/5th seconds.

This particular timer has a mechanism which allows precise timing by 1/5 seconds and in one minute increments until it is stopped, up to 30 minutes total elapsed time or as much as 30 minutes has passed. During the WWII Period both Waltham and Elgin made similar devices for the US Military. Check out: "Elgin Timer" to see more about them.

Mechanical Stopwatches were common until they were replaced with electronic timers.
