Ernest C. BarnesCompass Chronometre Pocket Watch
This silver cased pocket watch is about an 8 size and also has a skeletonized type movement that has no maker marks. What is unique about the movement is the compass set into the bridge plate. The movement cover is marked with letters MI and Chronometre.

Tom BrownI like those Ernest, I have two of them that I tinker with every now & then to try to get running again. I think mine are closer to a 16s.
Each of mine have different patterns cut out & your make a 3rd.
Nice!

Gerald ZimmermannErnest
Swiss-made watch; low level cylinder escapement (4-6 jewels) upgraded by skeletonizing and the little compass made ca 1860.
Forget about the chronometre writing. Chronometre was at this times not protected by law. Especially the 1/2-, demi- an mi- chronometre are used as a loose sales argument without substance.
At those days the wages for 1/2 days work of a trained engraver was lesser than the costs of one or two pairs of additional jewels.
Watches like this must be 'en vogue' in rural regions. There is a wide range of various motives found: ornaments, flowers, buildings, persons etc.
I like those watches. They have a touch of uniqueness.
Regards,
Gerald
